A guide to BeerPal

Start with what you taste.

BeerPal is a beer tasting app that helps you describe what you notice, keep a record of what you enjoy and explore beers using available catalogue profiles. The record starts with your observations.

Choose a guided or quick tasting

A guided tasting takes you through questions about the beer in your glass. The questions adapt to the beer’s style and your answers. Record what you notice; if you are unsure or want to skip a question, you do not need to invent an answer.

A quick tasting is a shorter record: choose descriptors and rate your enjoyment. Those descriptors are not treated as measured flavour intensities. You can also keep journal notes for yourself.

Flavour and enjoyment answer different questions

A flavour observation describes the beer. An enjoyment rating describes your response to it. You might notice strong bitterness and enjoy it, or notice the same bitterness and prefer something else. Keeping the two separate makes the record more useful than treating every sensory score as a preference.

You do not need a perfect vocabulary to begin. Use the questions and descriptors to capture what you can recognise. Missing or uncertain observations remain a limit on what can be inferred from that tasting.

What a recommendation means

BeerPal uses your recorded observations, enjoyment ratings and available catalogue profiles to suggest beers to explore. A catalogue profile is reference information about a beer; it is separate from what you personally recorded in a tasting.

A match score expresses similarity, not the probability that you will enjoy a beer. Results depend on the information available about you and the beers being compared. Treat a suggestion as a starting point for discovery, with room for your own judgement.

AI is a choice

Scans, tasting summaries, coaching and beer insights use AI services only after you allow them. The consent notice explains what information those features send before you choose.

Your journal notes are never sent to an AI service. You can turn AI features off at any time in Settings. Saving tastings never needs AI.
